The following is an excerpt from the dime novel: The Adventures of Dandy Seeder: The Dark River. Written 1883
The walls of the canyon were well over a hundred feet high and near impossible to scale to due the sheerness of the cliffs. It was just large enough for a man to walk through, so the two that crept silently through the knee deep water had to go in single file. The darkness of the night hid the two figures as they began to plot their evil deeds.
"We must continue on, Seeder and the Marshals not far behind." Black Bird said, his savage roots giving him insight in their situation.
"Yessir, we would be in some mighty trouble ifn we were to get caught here." Bourter.
"How we get outem this one boss?" Black Bird said in his usual cowardly tone.
Bourter surveyed the area once more. Justice was hot on his trail, and it was surly the gallows for all the black hearted deeds he had committed over the years, but evil does not give up so easily.
"Those two indents in the walls on either side of the cliff, we could hide there and ambush em when they come down the trail." A wicked smile flashed across the face of the man that many mockingly called "The Gentleman"
"I's always lookin to scalp em mo white folks. But if we's do em that we gonna be a trapped!" Black Bird said dancing around.
"Your correct my negroish friend. If we do that we would certainly be caught. But the best way to get near someone you want to kill, is to have them capture you." The dark malice in Bourter's heart fluttering at the idea.
A short time after the two villains had managed to conceal themselves they heard the righteous tune of The Battle Hymn of the Republic being whistled, Dandy was getting closer. Seeder was leading a party of six Marshals through the narrow chasm, unaware of the unhonorable ambush that awaited him. Bravely Dandy marched on, stepping into the dark waters as he got closer and closer to his archenemy.
