Greetings soldier!
The Bostock Expedition is high-risk, complicated venture that involves a large number of individuals working together. At its start, the expedition had almost one-hundred crew; 69 members of Golden Age Salvage and 18 Subcontractors. Everyone taking part in the journey into Dinosaur Swamp, whether official salvor or Subcontractor, has an important role to play. Each person has been hired because he or she has skills and abilities that are vital to the success of the operation. As such, it's probably a good idea to learn who your teammates are. After all, your lives are in their hands... Greetings soldier! So you've presumably been hard at work for the past few months, scavenging and excavating beside your comrades-in-arms from Golden Age Salvage (G-Sal). Considering that they've been your bedfellows for a while now, it's probably about time you read up on them. In the salvage industry, G-Sal is an "A-Rated" firm, meaning that it has high marks from past employers, and few to no contract breaches or botched jobs on its record. As far as anyone knows, G-Sal has successfully honored every contract it's accepted and has always found salvageable tech from which to make money. Though the company has had its challenges and lost its share of crew members over the years, it continues to clean out new sites and exceed expectations. To be part of Golden Age Salvage is most certainly an honor, and many a merc or excavator has tried his hand at getting a coveted spot on the crew. The company has a solid reputation within mercenary and freelance circles, both for the salvage expertise and combat prowess of its members. Given the dangerous locations in which G-Sal goes to find salvage, it is a necessity that every single member is a soldier, as well as a salvor. From the insane depths of the Magic Zone to the demon-ridden wastes of the Motor City Badlands, the company has worked in some of the continent's worst hell holes and has salvaged hundred of millions of credits worth of goods in the thirty years since its inception. Among its most notable finds are the Redstone Arsenal in Alabama, the Ford Motor Company HQ in Old Detroit, and the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. The following data details G-Sal's history and structure, as well as information about the founder, Ingram Bostock. Click Here to read all about your illustrious employer. Greetings soldier!
North America is littered with the ruins of pre-Rifts towns and cities, most of which are dangerous, haunted, or uninhabitable for whatever reason. Ruins are ominous and disconcerting places; places that symbolize humanity's powerlessness in the face of the Great Cataclysm. Foremost among these symbols of civilization's collapse is the once famous municipality of Washington, D.C. - colloquially known by the post-apocalyptic natives of the Eastern Wilds as "TonDC." Not many individuals know that TonDC exists or that it was, at one time, the center of government for the old American Empire. Before the Rifts, the so-called "District of Columbia" was the capital of the entire United States. It served as home for all three branches of American government, as well as host to a multitude of foreign embassies, museums, monuments, libraries, and works of historic import. It's not an exaggeration to state that Washington, D.C. was representative of the old American Empire's leadership, as well as an icon of pre-Rifts American culture and civilization. Yet now, circa 101 P.A., TonDC is a forlorn, mostly forgotten ruin. The flood waters of an engorged Potomac River have swallowed roughly 65% of the municipality, turning the area into a large, swampy morass broken by debris and patches of dry land. Scavengers have generally avoided the region due to the likelihood that anything of value was washed away or destroyed by water during the Great Cataclysm. Furthermore, TonDC's proximity to the coast puts it in the sights of pirates and Splugorth raiding parties, which also makes the locale unattractive to visit. Still, for those who know of TonDC's existence, there is a strong mystique surrounding the place. What isn't intriguing about an unexplored city that once was the beating heart of the old American Empire? There are a number of stories that connect TonDC to the legendary Neemans of myth, describing the city as one of the last holdouts of the American government until succumbing to the madness of the Dark Age. Later stories claim that a community of survivors - The Republicans - arose within the ruins, though they've long since vanished, once again leaving the former U.S. capital abandoned to history. Although not relevant to Dinosaur Swamp, the following information is what the IMCN has learned about the region formerly known as the "District of Columbia." Greetings soldier!
Now that you've likely already cut your teeth dealing with dinos and Shemarrians, it's time to get into the mystical side of Dinosaur Swamp. There are several kinds of magic that are represented among the Swamp's residents. However, given the region's remoteness and inhospitability, magic-users don't have much reason to come here. As such, one doesn't find the diversity of mystic arts that perhaps exists in other parts of the continent. Still, the region has a few magics that have come to prominence. In Dinosaur Swamp, there are three kinds of magic that seem to flourish more than any other. Eco-Wizardry and Native American Shamanism are the first two. Eco-Wizardry is a mystic art that is unique to Dinosaur Swamp; the region's only indigenous form of magic. It uses natural materials from plants and animals to create magical items; not unlike a primitive form of Techno-Wizardry. Native American Shamanism is only practiced among the residents of Camp Cherokee in Georgia, as well as a few surrounding traditionalist Indian tribes such as the Lumbee, Catawba, and Creek. This culturally-specific magic reflects the animist beliefs of its Amerindian users, and focuses on interactions with nature spirits, gods, and the natural world. The third type of magic that has a strong presence in Dinosaur Swamp is Voodoo. Like Native American Shamanism, Voodoo is a surviving system of magic and religious beliefs that predates the Great Cataclysm. Many of the Swamp's Voodoo followers and practitioners, called "Voodouisants," are spillovers from neighboring Louisiana, which has a large population of Voodouisants (estimated to be the largest on the continent). Before the rifts, the Deep South was a center of Voodoo practice and it continues to be so, today. Other practitioners are likely to be travelers from the Dark Woods region of Alabama; a placed noted for its community of Dark Arts enthusiasts. Voodoo, as both a religion and a form of magic, has proliferated through the Swamp for centuries and is most often practiced in isolation or solitude. Yet, there are a few sociétés or "Voodoo societies" that exist, even in the region's uncivilized reaches. The main enclave of Voodoo in Dinosaur Swamp is none other than Char - formerly Charlotte, North Carolina. Reports indicate that the local Voodoo magicians are brutal thugs, involved in constant competition and street wars with other factions, particularly the Techno-Wizards of Char. Supposedly, the head Voodouisant is a man named Baron LaCroix, a master of magic transplanted from the bayous of Louisiana. Little is known about him. Oh, and Voodoo magicians tend to go for intimidating, self-important names and titles, such as Baron, Papa, Doctor, Madame, Bishop, Deacon, and Queen. Consequently, don't be surprised if you meet practitioners with names like "Papa Dread," "Bishop of the Boneyards," and other such nonsense. Greetings soldier!
Continuing with our previous equipment posts, this next post addresses the expedition's many non-robotic, salvage and military vehicles. As with any large scale salvage and exploratory venture, proper transportation is essential to mission success. In a region such as Dinosaur Swamp, only the most rugged and defensible vehicles will serve. Given the type of terrain we're expecting, Golden Age Salvage has chosen hover crafts to supply most of the expedition's transport needs. It's tough to beat the versatility, maneuverability, and speed of a hover craft. Whether it's a small and fast hovercycle, or a mammoth hover cargo carrier like Big Bertha (detailed in her own post), hover vehicles are capable of crossing and negotiating nearly any terrain - be it forest, marsh, or ruins. Other kinds of vehicles, such as water craft, tracked vehicles, and wheeled vehicles, are primarily used on site, as required. Many of the expedition's salvage and construction vehicles are ground-based conveyances, while boats and mini-submersibles will be employed in the deep swamp lands and along the coasts (particularly at the submerged remnants of Cape Canaveral). All vehicles, regardless of type, have been specifically selected and upgraded by Golden Age Salvage to suit the needs of this expedition. All are heavy-duty, armed, and highly tolerant of water (if not entirely aquatic or amphibious to begin with). Nearly all of the expedition's vehicles either belong to Golden Age Salvage or are on loan from Northern Gun. However, G-Sal has also cleared a few expedition members to bring their own personal vehicles, so long as said vehicles are small, low maintenance, and have a long-lived power system (such as nuclear). Hover craft with aquatic/amphibious capabilities are strongly preferred. Some examples of personal vehicles found in the expedition include Clara and Ty's NG-SU600 Wave Cutter and Artyom's NG-300 Speedster. Personal vehicles are not included in this post.
