Obsidian is generally a naturally-occurring volcanic glass found most often near rhyolitic lava flows, also called obsidian flows. However, the obsidian we obtained appeared almost synthetic. This makes sense, as it was literally being used as a building material, and the technology needed to such a thing isn't exactly sophisticated in this day and age. While it looks sturdy, in principle obsidian is still glass, so we'll have to be very careful when cutting down to shape. Still, it's an excellent material, and the samples we found will make beautiful black pieces.
